View from the top is back after a very long hiatus. I’ve missed writing this weekly series on my blog but I’m very happy to share some new view from the tops from my recent travels.
The view from the top of Dune 45 was probably one of the most breathtaking views I’ve ever had the pleasure of witnessing. It was one of the most special days on my recent Africa trip and it is a vision that is engrained in my mind as one of the greats.
Dune 45 is located within the Namib Desert and has become a huge tourist destination in Namibia and after I climbed Dune 45 I soon realised why.
We had to leave our campsite at 4.15am which was just within the Soussesvlei national park area and drive for 15 minutes to the foot of Dune 45. What I saw as we arrived were people clambering to get to the top in time for sunrise, we arrived just as the sun was rising and it was like a rat race to get to the top. I didn’t understand why out of all the dunes in the desert, why was this one so overrun?
The walk up the dune was tough, I was bare foot and the sun was rising which meant that the temperature was also rising. I kept my head down and carried on up the dune huffing and puffing my way. When I got to the summit I took a little break and realised there and then that the walk and the 4am wake up call was beyond worth it.
My make up free, shower free, camping chic look. Sometimes you just have to embrace the dirty traveller look and go with it. I was more interested in the view than how my hair looked (as you can see).
After a few moments of reflection and total awe, a few of us decided to get away from the rat race and carry on along the summit of dune 45. What we were graced with then was total tranquility and well beyond any views that any of us could imagine. The sun began to rise right over the dunes and the colours of the dunes surrounding Dune 45 began to change to a golden colour.
We sat at the top of Dune 45 and took in the vast scenery that went for miles. It was one of my favourite African moments and I would highly recommend anyone going to Namibia to make the trek to Dune 45 because the view from the top is just phenomenal.
After marvelling at the view from the top of Dune 45 we ran down the dune and had breakfast in the carpark with the view of the incredible Dune 45 behind us.
Have you ever been up Dune 45 in Namibia?
