So the time has come to pack up my life and decide what to fit in my rucksack for a years journey. So what the heck does one pack for an African overland trip, a beach break in the Philippines, summer in New Zealand and everywhere between Patagonia and Colombia in South America?
Well I can’t say I’m sure myself but I’m going to tell you what I THINK I’m supposed to pack and some great little travel accessories I’ve picked up in preparation for this trip.
First and most importantly the bag that is going to have all of the essential items – this Berghaus ruck sack that I got from Blacks and Millets. It is a 65L rucksack that has all the bells and whistles to get me through this year long adventure around the globe.
Being so little I’ve always found it tricky finding the right size day bag/back pack but luckily I found this beauty on the Millets site. It is not only the right fit just for me it’s my favourite colour!
These cute little pouches from Typo are super useful for all those little annoying things to pack such as headphones, passport, external hard drive, girly bits and bobs and chargers.
I’ve never used these before on any of my trips but after reading about them and hearing people swear by them I’m going to give them a try.
USB port charger
With myself and Dan both having iPhones, kindles, a GoPro and shavers that need to be charged via USB we knew we needed something so the arguments about whose item is going to be charged first wouldn’t happen (we hope).
Travel adaptor with USB port
As we are travelling to various destinations all over the world it’s pretty impossible to travel without one of these.
The original pole that I bought has already rusted up and won’t extend so I went for something a little different this time. It is a bit heavier but it seems a lot better already. I already can’t wait for the selfie action this is going to produce.
Typo kindly sent me this cool pillow to get me through those long plane, train and bus rides and I’m going to look pretty cool with it as well! Anyone knows travelling long distances without one of these is kind of unbearable.
Travel clothes line
We are spending a total of 5 months during our 12 month stint camping, camping means no washing machine which means we are going to be doing ALOT of hand washing in basins and buckets so this clothes line from Blacks is going to come in handy every couple of weeks.
It’s pretty impossible to go camping without a head torch and when it is pitch black somewhere in the African savannah this head torch will be a God send! Check it out here
Quick dry towel
I can’t say I’m a huge fan of these micro fibre towels but they do the job. They dry me and themselves pretty quickly and it’s going to take up half the space of a normal towel and that is something I’m going to need.
Now I know no one ever talks about the not so great things for travelling but we must face facts it’s not all glam, it’s not 5 star hotels and perfect instagram pictures, life goes on for us girls including the dreaded you know what! So after chatting to a few people I decided to get a moon cup for that time of the month. I won’t go into great detail but I will say it’s good for the environment and it can be used over and over again so saves you having to purchase things every month. Check out their website for more info.
A friend also bought me this She Wee as a bit of a gag gift but actually I’m taking it and I know I’ll use it when there is no toilet (which there will be during a lot of this trip) and I’m scared a snake might come and bite my bottom!
All the electronics
As a blogger I am going to be documenting this whole year and sharing with you so it makes sense to take all of my blogging gear. This includes my MacBook, Nikon D60 camera, GoPro and external hard drive to store all of the memories. I will be taking my brand new Kindle paperweight to cure the boredom on buses and my trusty old iPod to keep me sane.
During our long journeys Dan and I will no doubt get stuck into some pod casts and it’ll be great to listen to these together using this headphone splitter.
I won’t go into great detail about what clothes I’m packing because well that’s just bit boring but I will need nice light weight gear for Africa, shorts, singlets, a couple of dresses and a hoody for the early morning safari’s and cooler evenings in the dessert.
I am guessing once I get to New Zealand which is half way during the trip I will need to re-stock for South America as we are going to the end of the world, well last stop before Antartica and it is going to be FREEZING!
Anyway I’m off in exactly one week so if there is something you think I will need PLEASE TELL ME NOW!
Disclaimer: I received some items from Blacks and Millets for this trip, I would never recommend or feature any item that I wouldn’t personally use. They have some seriously well priced travel items so do check out their website.
