San Sebastian is a fantastic seaside town in the Basque region of Spain that is a hub of cuisine. San Sebastian is so varied and there are plenty of activities, food, drinks and culture to keep you occupied for a few days. Here are 10 things you must do when you are in San Sebastian.
1. Eat pintxos
You cannot go to San Sebastian and not eat the tasty pintxos, the pintxos bars are everywhere and put on a huge spread at lunch time and later on in the evening. Think of any type of tapas, check it on a piece of bread and put a stick through it and you have the famous pintxos.
2. Climb Monte Urgull
The climb up Monte Urgull is nothing short of gorgeous, towering above San Sebastian old town is a statue of Jesus and Napoleons old fort. The views over the Basque country are stunning and the beautiful beach beckons below.
3. Go swimming
Speaking of the beach beckoning, on those warm Spanish summer days taking a dip at San Sebastian beach is a must! The water is cool, calm and clean.
4. Wander around the old town
San Sebastian old town is buzzing at all times of the day but comes alive at night, the restaurants and bars spill out onto the street and the place is full of life. Beautiful shutters and incredible historical buildings.
5. Monte Igueldo
Take the funicular up to Monte Igueldo for impressive views over San Sebastian. Panoramic views over the Basque Country and out to sea.
6. Walk along the promenade
Stroll the promenade at any time of the day and you will see all sorts, families, locals, runners, holiday makers but above all you get this lovely view over San Sebastian beach.
7. Ride the worlds most rickety rollercoaster
I didn’t do this but my husband did and it was a laugh! The rollercoaster is at the top of Monte Igueldo, check out the hilarious video he took whilst on the rollercoaster (if you can even call it that).

8. Wander around Napoleons fort
On the way up to Monte Urgull you can search the nooks and crannies of Napoleons fort which my history buff husband just loved! There is also a small museum at the top to explore.
9. Miramar Parkea
This lovely little park is nestled on a hill behind San Sebastian beach and is the perfect place for calm and serenity after the madness of the old town and the busy beach. It also offers gorgeous views over the bay.
10. Hang out on the boardwalk for stunning sunsets
Last but not least San Sebastian has wonderful sunsets, spend some time down at the board walk to watch the sun dip below the ocean.
