A couple of weekends my girlfriends and I headed up North to spend a weekend in the cool, hip neighbourhood of the Northern Quarter in Manchester.
The reason for the weekend is that one of my very dear friends is moving back to New Zealand so any excuse to have a night out and we’ll take it!
We took a Virgin Train up on Friday evening and arrived at our air bnb apartment by 9pm slightly bleary eyed after a few prosecco’s on the train up. Our apartment was amazing, it was very spacious and was in the perfect location to the Northern Quarter.
Saturday morning started how they always do…with smashed avocado and a poached egg on sourdough toast.
Trof was recommended to us by our host as a great brunch spot. We got a booth downstairs and chatted to the very friendly staff before ordering our breakfasts. Trof is a cafe, restaurant, bar and nightcub so to say it’s versatile is an understatement. It has three levels and the decor is to die for.
Coffee was next on the list and we had Foundation on our list for the coffee and the decor. This place is instagram gold in terms of how great the space is. I went for banana bread and a “Thank you berry much” smoothie. We sat back and hung out here for a little while.
It was time to see some of the sights and we went for a walk out of the Northern Quarter to the John Ryland Library which was featured in the Harry Potter films. The library is part of The University of Manchester and is free to visit, it is a gothic building filled with dark hallways and stained glass windows. The best part of the building is the famous library where students were quietly working away and I was trying to work out which part was in Harry Potter.
We walked back to the apartment to get ready for the night ahead, we picked up some snacks and the all important bottles of prosecco and got ready for a night on the town.
Our first stop was Noho in the Northern Quarter where we had some cocktails before heading to our favourite Trof for a night of drinking, dancing and so many laughs! I can highly recommend Trof for a wicked night out.
The following morning feeling very worse for wear we went to Federal for our brunch fix, this is a Kiwi/Aussie cafe located in the Northern Quarter and was pretty much our saviour on that Sunday morning. The menu featured all the brunch greats along with some extras. I went for Eggs Benedict with bacon and avocado with a cold Milo! The actual cafe was cute and cosy and the food was excellent.
Before we knew it, it was time to jump back on the train to London. It was such a fun weekend filled with laughs (sometimes until we cried) and I just loved Manchester, in particular the Northern Quarter.
