This months travel link up is all about our greatest adventures, I have been very lucky over the past 8 years to experience all sorts of adventures since I left my home in New Zealand.
I lived on the beautiful island of Koh Samui in Thailand for a year, travelled throughout South East Asia, moved to the other side of the world, backpacked around Europe (more than once), got married and now I am planning my biggest adventure of all, a year long adventure around the world.
But one particular adventure sticks out as the greatest – my adventures getting to London and my first year here where I visited 10 countries and got up to all sorts of crazy things that 24 year olds get up to.
So my greatest adventure started with a three week trip through America on a Contiki tour called ‘L.A to the Bay’. It was the best way to kick off my new life, three weeks of partying, sight seeing and making life long friends.
I went to Los Angeles first where I got my first real taste of freedom and solo travel. I had such a great time there basking in the sunshine and saying about 100 times “It’s just like the movies”.
My Contiki tour took me to San Diego where after a couple of tequila’s we were all best friends and this shot became our go to group photo for the tour.
I explored the sandy city of Sedona, met some cowboys and posed with a cactus. Check out my amazing/cringe worthy pout!
I saw my first wonder of the world at the magnificent Grand Canyon.
I partied until the early hours of the morning in Las Vegas, the best thing was getting in a stretched hummer with a yard glass full of cocktails and driving up the Strip.
I also made friends with this girl in Vegas and we are now still friends who basically swapped lives. She lives in NZ with her kiwi husband now.
I saw snow for the first time in Yosemite National Park.
The final stop on the tour was San Francisco which was the perfect ending to an absolutely epic trip. Again, we partied until the early hours of the night at a gay bar in The Castro.
The final night was spent seeing the sunset from a boat under the Golden Gate Bridge, it doesn’t get much better than this.
My friend Stacey who I had met on the trip was coming to New York as well so I was so happy to spend another few days with her in The Big Apple. It was one of those surreal moments where I just kept pinching myself, I couldn’t believe I was in New York City.
What appeared to be my greatest adventure yet was only just beginning. I had no idea what would await me in London but here is what followed upon arrival.
I went to Spain
I explored the greatest city in the world with fresh eyes. Again, I kept saying “It’s just like the movies”. I felt very at home in London straight away and knew I had made the right choice to pack my life in to a backpack and move here.
After being in London for a couple of months and staying on various people’s couches it was time to head off on the next phase of my greatest adventure. Almost a rite of passage for any Kiwi in London – A Europe summer backpacking trip.
I stopped in Paris and every moment felt like a dream, I also acted like a complete tourist!
I got up to no good in Amsterdam
I marvelled at all the pretty statues in Austria
I partied ALOT and loved every single moment of it.
I floated down a river in the Czech republic whilst on a pub crawl.
Before I knew it my first Europe backpacking experience was over. But upon arrival back in London, the party continued. I made loads of new friends, finally got some work and was starting to find my feet 5 months after leaving home.
The final piece of the puzzle in my greatest adventure yet was how I finished this insane year, I went to Egypt. A country I never thought I’d visit but I did and I loved every moment of it.
Seeing the pyramids, learning the history and enjoying some sunshine after my first London winter was bliss.
This adventure taught me a lot of things: how to be independent, how to be cheap, how to fun a lot of fun and how to travel with friends and how to meet new people and forge friendships that only you and that person will understand through your shared travel experiences.
I never expected the journey to London and my life here to pan out the way it did but this first year here and the things I did, places I visited and people I met made my greatest adventure one to remember.
Here is to my next adventure which commences in 6 months, I only hope it was as much fun as this one was!
