After seeing the Scottish Highlands, Loch Ness and the Isle of Skye I wasn’t expecting to see anything better than these beautiful places but Glencoe blew them all out of the water. Glencoe was the most dramatic and stunning scenery I had seen yet and the fact that the weather was sunny, clear and bright blue skies certainly helped.
We stayed in a place called Loch Leven which was within a few minutes drive from Glencoe. We checked into our quaint hotel right called The Loch Leven Hotel on the loch, dumped our bags, got some directions from the very helpful staff and headed straight out for a scenic drive.
Within minutes we drove through Glencoe town and straight into the rolling hills, endless snow capped mountains and dramatic landscapes. Whilst trying to drive sensibly it was hard to not be taken aback by this insane view out of my window.
We headed straight for Glen Etive as this is where we had been told to go and visit the Skyfall house from the recent James Bond Film. Stupidly we didn’t google it we just took peoples word for it. We drove around 12 miles before we found a house, a gorgeous house. It was hidden by a huge fence so we figured it must of been it. We were half right. It was the house that Skyfall was based on and was actually Ian Fleemings ancestral home. My husband is a huge bond fan so this was really exciting for him. I’m just a Daniel Craig fan so I guess you could say I was excited as well.
We got back to the hotel and googled Skyfall and we were certainly in the right place but unfortunately the house in the film was a purpose built house in Surrey. There were several scenes filmed in Glen Etive though and well the scenery was without question the best I had seen in Scotland.
After our scenic drive in Glencoe we headed back to our hotel in Loch Leven and because the weather was so good (can you believe it?) we went and sat on the balcony at the hotel and had a few drinks in the sunshine. I even got my bare arms out it was that warm!
That evening we had a meal in the restaurant at our hotel. We went the full three courses (why not) and everything was beyond our expectations. We had a great meal, the staff were brilliant and the wine was flowing. We had an amazing view over the Loch and were able to watch the sunset from our table. It was bliss.
Our stay would not have been what it was without the great place we stayed. The Loch Leven hotel was a gorgeous building in the most beautiful setting. The staff were so accommodating and we just loved every minute of our stay there. We only wish we had stayed longer! To top it off, we were staying there over Easter weekend and got these little treats by our bed side.
I have every intention of going back to Scotland and would not hesitate to go back to Glencoe. It was an incredible experience.
Have you been to Glencoe in Scotland?
