I am staying in Italy for the latest post in my series ‘View from the top’ and it is coming from my favourite city in the world – Rome!
I first went to Rome three years ago and actually accidentally ending up going St Peter’s Basilica to get the view over St Peter’s Square. You must be thinking how do you accidentally walk up all those stairs to the top of the dome? But I genuinely thought I was queueing for the church or the Sistine Chapel or something else? I had no idea what I was doing but there was a queue so I joined it (how British of me).
After spending my €10 I found myself on a very small staircase that just kept going up and up and up. After what seemed like an eternity and my legs almost collapsed I reached the top to get this view!
It was an amazing view and you don’t realise that St Peter’s Square is actually shaped like a key until you are up the top. It is a unique place to overlook and quite nice to get some calmness in such a busy city. It was great to see the Pope’s back garden, although he wasn’t out in it that day.
Rome is one of those places where there is so much to do so I wouldn’t say this is a must do but it is a fantastic view and worth it if you are in the Vatican. Don’t forget to cover your knees and shoulders when going inside the church in the Vatican (hence my disgusting outfit).
