Now I will admit before I met my husband and as a true kiwi and rugby fan I did not like American football, I thought it was boring and a bit wimpy with all their helmets and padding but now I understand the game a lot more having watched it a lot over the past two years I get it, so when I got the opportunity to go and see a game at Wembley I jumped at the chance.
Decked out in my Oakland Raiders jersey we headed to Wembley stadium to see them take on the iconic Miami Dolphins, remember them from Ace Ventura Pet Detective? As soon as you disembark from the train at Wembley it is clear how much hype there is about this game. There are banners, flags, jerseys and loud Americas everywhere! Having never been to Wembley before I was also excited to be at this fantastic venue.
After taking our seats it wasn’t long before the teams came on to the field to practice, there was an insane amount of players on the field. I didn’t realise just how big the teams were as each player plays a special and unique part in each play of the game.
The entertainment was old rockers Def Leppard. They played three songs and the Raiderettes who are the Raiders cheerleaders danced along with them. There were fireworks and pyrotechnics, it was insane! Armed forces came on to the field and folded out the American flag and the USA flag before singing both national anthems.
The game got started quickly, although the game moves quite slow when there is action it is awesome and so much fun when a team gets a touch down. There was plenty of entertainment from the cheerleaders, they are some hard working ladies and because it was classed as a Raiders home game we got flags to wave and they gave away free t’shirts through cannons. The only thing I was disappointed with was the food, I thought they might put on a special spread of American themed food but it was same old crap they usually sell at Wembley.
I am so pleased I got to go and see such a unique sport here in London and next year there will be FOUR games played here in London so I think we will buy a season pass as it is such a fun day out. It is great trying new and interesting things that this wonderful city has to offer..
