This months travel link up with Emma, Kelly and Rebecca is a great one as I think all travellers have met that special, quirky, memorable person somewhere on the road.
My interesting character is a man called Jim and I met him in Penang, Malaysia.
In 2007 I lived on the island of Koh Samui in Thailand. I worked as a teacher at a British International School and although I had a visa to work there because I was a foreigner I had to leave the country every 3 months on what we called a ‘visa run’. This included a very long journey to Malaysia for the day. On one occasion I had to stay for a bit longer to sort out my visa and Emma who ran the school called up Jim to sort it all out. So I jumped on a bus to Penang and found myself at ‘Jim’s Place’. He gave me a room, sorted out some company for me to hang out with for the weekend, pointed us in the direction of the local cuisine and pub whilst he sorted out my visa.
It’s hard to pin point what made Jim so great, maybe it was his quirky hippy dress or his totally relaxed attitude but I adored him from the moment I met him.
I was very lucky to see him not just this once in my life, we literally bumped into each other one night clubbing in Chaweng in Samui, he had a pretty girl on his arm (not surprisingly) and remembered me as well which was awesome!
I then met up with him again at a mutual friends guest house on Koh Phangan on the night of a full moon party. He welcomed me with open arms and it was like embracing an old friend.
So if you are ever in South East Asia in need of a visa go and see Jim! He’s a gem and I’m so glad I got to meet this interesting character.
Unfortunately this is the only photo I have of Jim but here is a few of Penang, Malaysia where I met this guy.
