This week I was extremely privileged to attend one of the Queens Garden Parties. I applied for tickets for the Garden Party at Buckingham Palace a few months ago through the New Zealand embassy and was very lucky to be selected via ballot for this once in a life time opportunity.
So on Tuesday afternoon myself and my other half set off for the Garden Party at Buckingham Palace dressed in our best gears (new dress, new shoes and new hat) and lined up with all the other lucky people. Our passports were swiftly checked by the police officers at the gate and before we knew it we were past the grand gates and were walking into the Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. Words can’t describe just how excited I was and nothing could wipe the smile off my face. We came to the actual palace and handed our tickets in and walked through a room, on each side there was a very grand staircase leading up to the rooms, we were ushered outside into the garden. It was so surreal being there, especially as I have never seen photos of the garden so it was a totally new experience. We had an hour before the royal family made their appearance so we spent the next 40 minutes walking around the beautiful garden. There was a beautiful rose garden, statues of herons, a lake in the middle of the gardens and also a tennis court where Fred Perry once played.
We then went to find a good spot to see the entrance of the royal family and we were lucky enough to be ushered in such a way that we were had front row view of the royal family walking through the crowd and greeting people. Prince Phillip stood directly in front of me and spoke to people and Kate and the Queen walked past us as well, it was very exciting to see these all too familiar faces in the flesh.
We then decided it was time for afternoon tea, the spread was very delicious indeed. Ham and tomato sandwiches, cucumber sandwiches and lots of yummy sweets including eclairs, sponge cake and scones with jam. After having some food we caught some more glimpses of the Queen as she made her way through the crowd and into her Royal Tent where she drank tea with her family. It was nice to watch how the interacted with each other as we always see them speaking to the public but not with each other. Princess Anne, Phillip and Kate were all in a very animated discussion with lots of laughs and the Queen and Princess Eugenie were deep in conversation. Before we knew it, it was time for the Royals to exit so we formed a very orderly queue and clapped and cheered as the Queen exited.
All in all it was an incredibly special day and I will never forget it! It was such an honour to attend the garden party at Buckingham Palace and it will make for a great story in years to come.
