The next morning we wandered into the main town square and further into the old town, although this was not like any other place we had been before. There were no people anywhere, the shops were closed and the ‘bustling cafe culture’ that I was promised was nowhere to be found. It was one of the oddest experiences walking around this ghost town, Dan suggested it was like a Balkan town that you would find in Disneyland.
There was the cathedral to see although surprise surprise covered in scaffolding, the old town was sweet but nothing too exciting or individual or when we did finally find somewhere to eat the service was pretty terrible. We were later told that many people leave the city for the summer which explains the lack of people and many shops being closed.
It was really sweltering in Zagreb so I was quite pleased to leave the next day for the Plitvice National Park.
